About the site

The proposed development site is located approximately 1.9 miles to the south of Cookstown, to the east of the A29 Dungannon Road.

The wider campus is bounded by woodland and the Killymoon River to the south. The northern and eastern portions of the wider campus are characterised by agricultural fields and the Mid Ulster Sports Arena. The recently developed DFI Rivers headquarters is located at the eastern edge of the campus. To the west of the site is a small business park that includes a KDM Hire facility.

The Proposals

The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) is bringing forward proposals for the redevelopment of teaching, administration, and student accommodation buildings at Loughry Campus. A number of the existing buildings will be replaced with modern buildings which will be carefully positioned and sited to create a central core to the campus, complemented by new areas of public realm and car parking locations.

The core objective of the project is to enhance the student experience by creating an attractive campus environment in which students and staff can safely travel between the various buildings.  The redevelopment will be delivered on a phased basis with the development focused within the footprint of the existing campus – there will be no new development in the countryside.

Specifically, the proposals make provision for:

  • Demolition of existing ‘Packaging’, ‘Administration’, ‘Science’ and 'Food Education' buildings and development of replacement Science building, Student Hub, Staff Facilities building and Student Residential Accommodation;
  • Reconfiguration of surface level car parks; provision of cycle parking facilities;
  • Enhanced landscaped and open spaces;
  • Improvements to elevational treatments to existing buildings.
The proposals will result in a modest increase in both the overall amount of floorspace within the campus and to the number of student beds provided on site.
